Hello. I'm Yankee Barbie and I'll be guest blogging today for JoAnn, who's still celebrating her Yankees' 27th World Series win. When JoAnn was seven-years-old, she had no doubt whatsoever that she'd grow up to play center field for the New York Yankees. Writing would be her backup occupation, something she planned to do after retiring from baseball. Those were, in her mind, her only options. While waiting for the Yankees management to call, she wrote her first novella -- a tragic romance about two star-crossed mallard ducks -- for a second grade writing assignment.
The paper earned a gold star. And JoAnn kept writing. She even wrote to Mickey Mantle. Who wrote back! (Okay, some skeptics might suggest that a team secretary actually wrote those letters, but JoAnn prefers to keep the fantasy alive. And I don't blame her.)
Although the Yankees have yet to call her to New York to platoon center field, she has written a lot of books for a bunch of publishers. Including her first published novel, Stardust and Diamonds, for NAL, which was about -- what else? -- a baseball player.
But enough about her. . .
As you may have noticed in this photo, due to an unfortunate problem in scale, I appear a bit like Godzilla hovering over Tokyo. But to paraphrase a line from Sunset Boulevard (one of my fave movies!), I am NOT too tall. Department 56 made Yankee Stadium too small.
Yankee Stadium, known to true believers as The House That Ruth Built, was built in 1923. The first game in the stadium was held on April 18, 1923, with the Yankees beating the Boston Red Sox (from whom the Yankees acquired Babe Ruth, which is another story) 4–1. In its inaugural season, the Yankees also -- yay! -- won the World Series. (Though neither JoAnn nor I were around to witness it.)
This Cathedral of Baseball hosted thirty-seven World Series, more than any other baseball stadium. It also hosted the major-league All-Star Game four times: 1939, 1960, 1977, and last year, 2008.
But times change. Life moves on. This season the Yankees moved into a new home across the street. To bring tradition with them, last November, four members of the 1998 World Series championship team and kids from Bronx based youth groups ceremoniously dug up home plate, the pitcher's rubber mound pitching plate, along with the surrounding dirt of both areas and transported them to their new home. As this is being written, burly men with huge machines and sledge hammers are tearing down The House that Ruth Built to make way for a 10-acre Heritage Park that'll stand in its place. But I'm still sad to see it go, so I'll take a page from my dear friend Scarlett O'Hara Barbie and think about that tomorrow.
I understand how the new stadium might have been a little intimidated. After all, as I just pointed out, it had a LOT to live up to! I totally understand this, having to compete with Bridal Barbie. And don't even get me started on Malibu Barbie!
But the new stadium lived up to its heritage. Just like its big brother, it hosted a World Series in its inaugural year. And what a Series it was! There were times I was sitting on the edge of my seat!
There were also some GREAT plays! (Johnny Damon, the highlight reel people called. They're including your super brilliant steal of third base.)
The Pittsburgh Pirates proved to be super adversaries. For a while, I even used JoAnn's autographed Mickey Mantle ball to work out my Pilates, in case I'd be called in to platoon Center Field.

But that didn't prove necessary. Just like in 1923, our boys in pinstripes prevailed to win their 27th World Series and left me sitting on top of the world. (And a stack of champagne boxes!)And to the Phillies fans, don't feel too bad. As the Yankees have learned twenty-seven times, there's always next year.
To share the celebration, JoAnn will be giving one reader who comments (chosen at random) a copy of the Mills & Boon edition of The Return of Caine O'Halloran, her 1994 Rita finalist HQ Temptation, featuring -- what else? -- a NY Yankees pitcher! To allow fans more time to celebrate and watch the tickertape Victory Parade down the Canyon of Heroes tomorrow, I'll be announcing the winner at five p.m. EST Friday afternoon.
Love to all baseball fans, whatever your team,
Yankee Barbie

Great blog by Yankee Barbie - can tell she is true Yankee fan. I'm glad they won for you both - at least they weren't playing "my" team. As alway, you know I think you are fabulous!
My Yankees Barbie says "howdy" to your Yankees Barbie. Barbie here would like to play First Base on your Fantasy team.

Silly boys - girls can play baseball too.....
Not only do I LOVE the men of baseball, I am also a HUGE fan of JoAnn Ross. Now they will be combined in one (I am sure) fantastic mental vacation from reality. So, I will wait on the bench until the books are available (put me in coach...)
I love Barbie and the Yankees. I live in MS but have to admit that when it comes to baseball I am a true blue Yankee all the way!! Geez, I hope no other Southerners hear this!!
great blog. lovin Yankee Barbie...
Congrats to all Yankee fans!! I sort of remember the last time my home team won, I think it was fun!! I'm not a big sports fan, but I've gotten hooked on sports rom books. It all started with SEP and finishing with Kate Angell. I guess I just like any and all heroes!! Win or not I plan to read this book too. Thanks, Sue
Sorry, Yankee Barbie, but as a Mets fan, I have been in mourning, since, oh, I don't know, June? Glad you had a good time.
Can't wait for the new series! And not the baseball one!
How appropo! No one throws a celebration like New Yorkers do when their favorite boys win!

Cute pictures and story.
Go Cubbies!
Very interesting viewpoint. I enjoyed the blog. Congrats on the win, for all those involved. Have a great day!
Congratulations on the win. I enjoy your books.
I enjoyed this blog; glad for you that your team won!!
I'd have loved to have been able to visit Yankee Stadium but alas...
wonderful prize, the book that was a Rita finalist.

This was a super cute blog!! I love your books and can't wait to read more..Not a Yankees fan, tho!! Go Braves.Maybe next year!!
Yankee Barbie, I am celebrating right along with you! I love the Yankees as I am originally from NY. Man, I miss it so badly.
BTW...looking forward to more books from Joann!
Maithe, from Miami, FL
Congrats to the Yanks, even though they never had to wait as long as the Red Sox to win. Love your books and especially series.

I am a big sports fan, but, alas, our town's pro teams are in the habit of losing, not winning. Luckily our University of Houston Cougars are winning and I have good news on weekends. Their quarterback. Case Keenum, is leading the nation in yardage and in total touchdowns and should make it to the Heisman finals. He deserves to win the Heisman, but not playing for a better-known college, he may have a hard time overcoming that.
Congratulations on your team's win! I love JoAnn's books and am looking forward to the new series with the great name font. ;-)
Even tho I live in Canada, I thought that the Yankees had a great and exciting win. YAY!!
I was on the floor lol!! I even startled my poor senior citizen kitty. Thanks for the good laugh.
I am a pilates professional and Barbie's use of the baseball was hilatious. I also had one of the first Barbie's ever made and absolutely love NYC so much that I moved there for 3 yrs while working in the airline business.
So good laughs, good memories and great fun!
Congratulations Barbie and Joann - your cheering efforts helped the Yankees to another title! I am looking forward to July and Shelter Bay, but it seems like a LLOOONNNGG wait. I am sure it will be worth it, though, just like all Joann's other books. And keep the audiobooks coming. I love to listen and knit.
I love how Yankee Barbie wrote the post :) Loved the pictures, hehe... and what a great book to giveaway on this post.
Congrats to the Yankees. Have a picture somewhere of Babe Ruth's uniform hanging in the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown NY. I know you love baseball, but how about checking into NASCAR for a book series? Those guys are something serious! Thanks for all the wonderful hours of reading.
What a fun post....congrats to the Yankees (I was really hoping it would be a West Coast win though!):)
I just LOVE Barbie... :D Thanks for the blog! Very excited for the new series!!!!
Thank you, Yankee Barbie! You are definitely a woman for all seasons. I have been a fan of yours for many years! You and JoAnn are both very gracious to offer this great post and contest!

It was a pleasure to read your post Yankee Barbie. There was much happiness in our house today after the Yankees win.
Huge Yankees Fan. I have to say that I was on the edge of my seat too. Not to mention, standing up during Damon's steal to 3rd. Being from NY, you have to love the team.
I'm also a big fan of JoAnn Ross as well. Her books are great. I can't put them down once I start them.
Well at least the Twins won to the World Series winners. Congratulations Yankees.
Yep, the Yankees won.
Yankee Barbie crack the whip so JoAnn will keep writing.

Thanks for sharing. I never considered myself a sports person.
Great blog by Yankee Barbie!! Now if I could just find a Giants Barbie, I'd be set. Can't wait till the next book!!
Cute pictures and fun blog! Congrats on your team's win!!!
I am a big sports fan, but MY teams haven't been doing so well lately. I need to read a book about a hot athlete to make me feel better! ;-)
I love a good sports romance book, so thanks for the cool contest. I'm a Mets fan, but will congratulate the Yankees on the win. Hopefully, the Mets will turn it around in '10.
Let's Go Mets.
I'm a fan of Barbie. cute blog!
Great guest blogger! The pinstripes are very slimming...not that Barbie really requires slimming. Congrats on the Yankees' victory, although I confess to being an Orioles fan. Oh well, better luck next year. As a certain group is known to say, "The only easy day was yesterday."
As I sit here in my NY Yankee Joe Gerardi jersey (which I've owned since 1990something), I take great delight in reading your blog Yankee Barbie! Such fun and YAY Yankees! I have what I call "B&B" addictions - Books & Baseball! So for me there is nothing better than a baseball romance - and if happens to feature a Yankee - all the better! Also happen to love JoAnn's books. Great author and a fellow Yankee fan - doesn't get much better!

PS: You are correct Barbie - I own the same Dept 56 Yankee stadium - they made it too small! ;-D
Huge fan of JoAnn Ross and baseball. The Yankee Barbie is a great ideal for this special blog.
If you're going to have a guest blogger, who better to invite than Yankee Barbie??? Love the pics, JoAnn... and a big congrats to "your" Yankees!!

Congratulations Yankee Barbie and the Yankees!! And JoAnn!! Great blog.
There's still time, JoAnn. Never give up on the dream.
I am not too proud to admit that after that awesome win last night, I had several very interesting dreams about the Yankees and their very hot line-up. All that talk about bases and homeruns really got the imagination cookin! Not to mention the whole deal about men in uniform. I'm not even a sports fan, but I DO love the Yankees!
Thanks JoAnn for the fun read!
Well, I grew up with all the NY teams (Yankees, Knicks, Giants and yes, dad, the Mets), but now I live in BOSTON so .... congrats to the Yankees anyway.
I'm looking forward to your new series -- might have to go hunting for the Caine O'Halloran book first!
Like most people posting here, I'm a huge fan of JoAnn's. The Yankees, not so much. We're Red Sox nation people. But Barbie is a classic. Looking forward to the new series!
Enjoyed your Barbie Blog, Cute and Clever. Glad the Yankees did it in their new stadium!!
Soo Looking forward to your new series, especially as I too LOVE Oregon and the coast. Have family there and love to vacation there.
Have read all of your books including the High Risk series for the past 12 years or more- Especially Loved the Bayou series (Blue Bayou etc.) The first one being my favorite, what a hunky hero/rebel!! Appeals to our "bad boy" cravings!! :)
Keep us informed of when your next book comes out!! Can't wait!!
Kathleen Artica - A senior Citizen/grandmama who still loves a good romance/adventure!!
I love JoAnn Ross books. They are the best. I think Shane is my favorite so far with Dallas as a close second.

Congrats to the Yankees for winning the World Series the first year in their new stadium. Thanks for the unique blog JoAnn. I love your creativity! Can't wait for you new book!
This is my first time actually leaving a message on a blog, but what better time to start than to a romance writer. I loved your high rish novel series and can't wait for the new series. Loved your Yankee Barbie blog.
Does Yankee Barbie remember Bobby Murcer running between the monuments (when they were ON the field) to make a play that prevented an inside-the-park home run? Does Yankee Barbie remember taking the 4 or the D to the Stadium for games? That would make Yankee Barbie TRULY hot!
Thanks, JoAnn! I love your stories and love baseball. Off this weekend to watch my son in a scrimmage so this is perfect to get me in the baseball mood.
Three cheers for JoAnn and Barbie. Very funny post....I've always loved Ken myself. Hehehe.
I am still mourning for my St. Louis Cardinals. I couldn't even watch the playoffs. I did keep tabs on Ryan Howard of the Phillies. He was a star at my Alma Mater here in Springfield, MO. I've collected Barbies since the late 50's and am now looking for the Twilight Barbies. Love your books JoAnn.
First things first I am a HUGE fan and I thought Barbie did a good job of filling in for you on the blog.
2nd Love Black ops guys... can't wait for the next book to come out and your new series...
And 3rd I will be gracsious and wish you congrats on your team winning.. as I love baseball..
I love Barbie. I'm a huge fan of her's. I am also one of your biggest fan. I can't wait until the new series come out.
What is it about 7 y/o girls and sports? At that age my daughter,
Missy, told us she was going to be
the first girl quarterback in the
NFL. In fact, I have a photo of
Missy & Dan Pastorini, QB of the
Houston Oilers. Missy is wearing
her #7 jersey (Dan's #)and she is
holding the football Dan had been
awarded for that day's game. As
we all know, Missy didn't reach
that lofty goal. It would have
been all over the sports news if
she had. Although, don't hold me
to this, but I think she did QB a
touch football game during her
college days!

Yay Barbie, Yay Yankies, and Yay for a free book no matter who wins! It's a story I haven't read yet - so that would be cool if it t'were moi!! Glad to discover your blog site. I'm a HUGE fan.
Great blog!
Hope you had a great time at the parade! Wow! What a series for the Yankees!!
I'm a Milwaukee Brewer fan. We're still waiting for a championship win. Last year we choked!
27 wins!! That's unbelievable!
CONGRATS!
PARTY ON!!
Loved the blog, the yankees, not so much. Sorry Barbie and JoAnn. I'm more a college basketball and football fan. I always look forward to Joann's next book.
Any O'Halloran character is great by me. Put him in a baseball uniform, nice. Thanks for the blog and congrats on the world series. Someone's team has to play real baseball. Thanks JoAnn for all the entertainment you give us.!!!
My first baseball game was Yankee Stadium to see Yankees vs. Mets when I was five. I didn't know who to root for until my Grandfather told me we were Yankee fans. I've been that ever since. I cried when I heard they were knocking down The House that Ruth Built.
Loved post, Barbie and the pics were hysterical.
I enjoyed the blog very much even though I am not a Yankee fan. For myself and all the other readers in the world, I am glad you became a writer and not a ball player.
I am not a fan of professionsl team sports, but I am a fan of sports romances. Professional athletes are hot. I am happy for one of my favorite authors to have her favorite team win!
Loved that blog post! Congrats on your Yankees winning! Love your Blaze books!
Love the Yankee Barbie blog - very clever. I can't wait for the new series!!
YEAH YANKEES! A new yorker by birth, and a die hard Yankees Girl. Been living in pa for 30 years now, and All 4 of my kids raised on both teams. They converted to Phillies fans as they got older and texts and calls between us during games nights was wild. But... as has always been so in their lives, MOM WAS RIGHT!!! I know their Dad was jumping up and down on the sofas in heaven as they took home another one. Great Blog Barbie!! Where could I find your clone for my grand-daughter for Xmas??

Awesome post. Looks like my daughter can fit the shoes of Yankee Barbie! She was right there smack in the middle of the parade!
I'm really glad the winner was chosen at random because there were so many wonderful comments it would've been impossible to choose my favorite. I'm delighted so many people enjoyed Yankee Barbie's guest blog and thanks to all who took the time to comment!
I wish I had copies of The Return of Caine O'Halloran for everyone, but as it was, I could only find one Mills & Boon edition in the attic. Which goes to -- ta dah! -- Maria Moster.
Congratulations Maria, and if you'll email your post office mailing address to joann@joannross.com, we'll get Caine on his way to you.
I'm not a sports fan, well unless it's NASCAR and even that I'm getting out of. But what a great post.
would love to win!
