DWTS and First Crushes

When Dancing With The Stars announced the new cast lineup, I knew, although my dancing heart belongs to So You Think You Can Dance, I was going to be tuning in. If for no other reason than to watch the Donny Osmond/Tom Delay Smackdown. Adorable Teen Idol Vs The Hammer. What's not to love about the matchup?

Unsurprisingly, a lot of friends on Twitter, MySpace, and Facebook started sharing stories of crushes on Donny.

My days of crushes were earlier -- and my major crush was Paul McCartney, the "Cute" Beatle. I knew he was meant for me. Why else did he have the EXACT same bangs I'd cut a few months before ever hearing of him? It was definitely a SIGN! (Hmm. Looking at them together, am I the only one who sees a remarkable resemblance between Donny and Paul?)

There's probably nothing more memorable than those early crushes. Something I was recently reminded of when I received an email from an old 8th grade crush. Looking back on it, the only two things he had going for him were Bambi brown eyes and dark hair that flopped over his forehead.

Oh, and every other girl in junior high had a mad crazy crush on him, which also gave him a value-added factor. (Thirteen-year-old girls are so shallow!) Many fathers hated him because he also happened to be the afternoon paper boy and their papers were always hours late arriving because all along his route we'd come out to the paper box to flirt with him.

So, fast forward many years. At first, when I saw his address on the email, I felt this little twinge, of Wow, he finally noticed me! (Yeah, shallow thirteen-year-old made a flash, unwelcome appearance. ) Then I began reading.

First he accused me of becoming a hillbilly, having read on my website that I'd moved from Oregon to Tennessee. Not exactly an auspicious beginning.

THEN, after insulting me, he actually had the nerve to ask for a free autographed book for his wife!

Duh. Like that's going to happen any time soon.

So much for teenage crushes and I am now so glad he never asked me out because what a waste of time that would've been!

But even though my first crush turned out to be a jerk (one of the more polite descriptions that comes to mind), I do think a possible outpouring of phone and text votes for the cute boy singer who made so many innocent hearts go pittypat could well prove the enduring power of a girl's first unrequited crush.

Stay tuned.

NEW BORDERS TRUE ROMANCE BLOG

Borders has just launched their new True Romance blog with a fab video of Sarah, from Smart Bitches, Trashy Books, interviewing much beloved book buyer Sue Grimshaw.

I'd love this even if Sue hadn't talked about the growing appeal of small town "comfort" romances shortly after I'd signed to return to that genre with my upcoming Shelter Bay series! :)

Enjoy!

GOT QUESTIONS? -- ASK AN AUTHOR DAY

Got Questions? Do we have answers! I think this is going to be way fun and hope some of you will join us!

CHAT WITH ROMANCE WRITERS ON TWITTER

ALL DAY, WED AUG. 5TH, 2009

You’re invited to take part in the first ever #askromancewriter day on twitter.

Chat with some of your favorite authors throughout the day.

Fans: Ask your burning questions about upcoming releases, favorite characters, book signing dates etc...

Aspiring Writers: Pick the brains of successful authors about how they got published, what the trends are, writing love scenes etc...

You can ask an author a question directly by going to twitter and using their twitter address: i.e. @JoAnnRoss

Or you can ask a general question to the group.

Make sure your tweets are under 140 characters and include the hashtag #askromancewriter at the end of your tweet.

Or you can use #ARW or #arr

Hashtags start with the # symbol and are one word or one phrase (no spaces) to enable people to search out a topic on Twitter.

So if you use the # hashtag then we can all follow along by typing in #askromancewriter or #ARW or #arw in the search bar.

The purpose of this event is to network baby! And have fun! And gush to your fave authors!

To connect with authors and meet fellow readers/fans as well. It’s also a great way to build “followers” (or friends) on Twitter.

So we hope you’ll join us!

Follow us on twitter for updates and to join in the conversation!
