Friday Fun Video -- Shelter Dogs, Surfing Dogs!

We've always had shelter dogs. Partly because we hate the idea of good doggies being killed because of overpopulation, but mostly because we're convinced they just make the best family members. We currently have three dogs. The first one was Shadow, whom we adopted because we were so lonely after Allie the Wonder Hiker died of cancer. He's a Shih Tzu/poodle mix who'd spent his first six months being kept in a tiny crate 24/7. Because he was punished whenever he peed in it, it took us a while to teach him it was okay to drink when he was thirsty. For the first few days, he'd only drink from my hand. Plus, he had such separation anxiety, my sweetie and I went six months unable to both leave the house at the same time because the poor pup would work himself into a panic frenzy in about two minutes of being left alone.

But noticing that he really enjoyed playing with other dogs at obedience school, we adopted Toby, a Maltese/poodle from East Tennessee Small Breed Rescue. He's the one in the above picture having a bad hair day because he'd just arrived at our house, so we hadn't yet had him styled.

Toby and Shadow instantly bonded, Shadow took on the role of alpha male big brother, and we were able to take them to the beach in South Carolina the very next week. You can see Toby, in blue, now looks much more stylish after a shampoo and clip. That was about nine years ago and we've all lived happily ever after. Shadow, the ultimate couch/bed potato, has even learned to enjoy our occasional Southern snowstorm. Well, sorta. Gortex helps.

Then, last January I was watching morning TV while making my cards for troops when the local news featured Jessie, a shelter dog, that we just knew would be perfect for our little family. But common sense told us that we already had two dogs. We really didn't need a third. So, liking to think of ourselves as sensible people, we talked ourselves out of it.

Fast forward two months later. It's March, and once again, I'm sitting in front of the TV on Sunday, making my soldier cards, when the Adopt-a-Pet segment of the news comes on, and the reporter's saying how they're bringing back a very special dog. Then went to a commercial break. Well, I told Sweetie that I knew it was going to be Jessie. And it was! Feeling bad that she'd had to wait for us to figure out that she was meant to be ours, we raced down to the shelter, arriving an hour before they opened and sat next to the door, prepared to claim her before anyone else could. As you can see from this photo, she settled in her first night home. She also gets along great with the boys, and even has Shadow chasing her in great laps around the yard, which is more exercise than he's gotten in years!

Jessie's also in her final training to be a hospital/nursing home visitation dog. As she's whizzed her way through the various courses, the trainer says that in all her years of teaching dogs, she's never seen one more suited for the task. Having spent many years volunteering as a "Friendly Visitor" at a nursing home, I know that pet visitation day is always a special treat, and we're thrilled that our darling Jessie's going to be able to make so many other people happy.

The one thing none of our furry babies can do is surf like the dogs on this week's Friday Fun video. Then again, we haven't given them an opportunity to try. Yet. So, who knows?

They all look so sweet. I can barely handle having one, can't imagine three.

Love your doggie pics, JoAnn! They are adorable, and it's so wonderful of you to adopt shelter dogs! : )

Misty, Yesterday I would've said it's not all that much more difficult than one. Until I'm now realizing how much sweetie does on the walking, letting in and out and feeding while I'm working!

Toni, Thanks, but they give back so much that it's a joy. I swear they seem to know and appreciate they've been rescued.

What a threesome of sweeties! We live in a condo, so we can't really have dogs any more, but I donate on a regular basis to our local shelters.

Ah, I love your dogs! My beloved pug died in August, but my daughter and I decided a few days before Christmas that we needed cats, pronto. So we adopted two brothers from the Humane Society. I forgot how much fun it is to have cats! It was also wonderfully heartwarming to see the crowds of people rescuing pets that weekend.

Vanessa, We've considered condos, but you're right, dogs would be a problem. Donating is super, though.

Elen, you missed the chicken? Try it. You'll like it.

Charlotte, I'm so sorry about your pug, but yay you for adopting those brothers! We dearly miss having cats, but grandkidlets and DIL are allergic, so we haven't replaced our precious, insane Kitty Scarlett Siamese.

I don't know how my precious Sheltie Cassie came to be at the Middle TN Sheltie Rescue, but she did. I brought her home last April and she's brought so much joy and fun into my life that I don't know what took me so long to make up my mind to adopt two and a half years after I had to say good-bye to my darling Chow Chow, Tazz.

Love your dogs and so glad to know they were adopted from shelters. I, too, hate the idea of a dog being killed. And you ended up with three wonderful friends. Congratulations to the dogs and your family! You are all winners!

JoAnn -

You and your sweetie are such
gu-te ne-shaw-mahs (good souls - Yiddish)! The doggies all look adorable. i thought the bed (I think it was a dog bed) with the first 2 dogs looked totally awesome. And I've lost my heart to Jessie! Part German Shepherd, maybe? Jessie will be a wonderful visitor to the nursing home, bringing joy to everyone!

I'm so glad that you included the link to this blog on PASIC.

Now I'm goingt to check out your chicken recipe. Gives me something to do as we (in the Mid-Atlantic states) are bracing for yet another blizzard.

Hey Marie-Nicole,
One of our boys (Shadow) came from here in East TN, coincidentally the vet assistant who helped ease Allie the Wonder Hiker through her terminal cancer, was her foster mom.

Toby came from Loudon. On his kill day the shelter people were madly looking for someone to save him, so Small Breeds Rescue drove down from Oakridge. Which is how we found him.

Jessie came from Young-Williams Shelter in Knoxville.

Gladys, Thanks. The dogs bring us so much joy. Each time we lose a dog -- and before Shadow, we had one at a time -- we SWEAR we're not going to get another one for a while. But then the house is so empty and quiet, we go out to find a new furry baby.

Binnie, First of all, as an Irish Catholic girl, I LOVE learning Yiddish expressions from you, and yes, it's a dog bed and a dog car seat. (They buckle into it on the road, which keeps them safe and it lets them see out the window.)

Jessie is a mix. Part Dobie (one breeder at PetSmart told us she was perfect, but too small), maybe part hound, which wouldn't be unusual down here where a Blue tick hound is the college team mascot, and the guy on TV suggested maybe even a Dachshund. Whatever she is, she's 100% adorable, sweet, and smart as a whip, and we love them all to pieces!

Hope you enjoy the lemon chicken. I've had lots of good reports about it, and it's become one of our personal favorite recipes! Good luck with that storm; our grandkidlets live in the D.C. area and I suspect they're enjoying the snow a LOT more than their parents!
