Yikes! Writing while driving?

During the past 26 years I've been published, I've written everywhere. On a sidewalk waiting for a Fiesta Bowl parade to begin, at halftime at the Rose Bowl, surrounded by thousands of screaming fans (okay, I was actually proofing galleys for my upcoming book, but it still took concentration), in the woods while camping, airport gates, and once, during a six hour root canal that went bad, I kept writing during those breaks when the oral surgeon would have to wait for more novocaine to kick in.

So, naturally, I love anything that makes writing outside my office easier. But I have serious doubts about this product I saw on Amazon.

Does anyone REALLY need a steering wheel desk? Hopefully people wouldn't actually work and drive, but as someone who's put on lipstick at red lights, yanked hot rollers out of my hair on the drive to work, and been in a car with a Realtor who was carrying on multiple conversations on her cellphone and looking up MLS listings while driving, I'm worried that if this takes off, we could be seeing more and more of this:

Or even this:

So, for all you other multi-taskers out there, I'd seriously advise giving this new product a pass.

Update: Just an hour after posting this, I read about a woman arrested in Florida for shaving what the cops called "her bikini area" while driving. Are we surprised she crashed into the back of a pickup truck?

Oh, dear. That little writing surface doesn't look terribly impact-friendly either. Does it come with an airbag? Yikes!

Wow...some ideas *do not* need to be born. LOL

Elen, I was thinking the same thing about the airbag.

Lucy, so, so true! Wanna bet people are also going to put their take-out lunches on it and eat while they drive?

I think that's a joke. I came across it a while ago on Amazon, and got a big laugh reading the reviews.

Ah, but Kathy, look at the update on the woman driving while shaving. Could happen. :)

Just found a website for various mobile desks for sale.

Ok, as a mom who has to sit and wait in the car while the kids are doing their choir deal, this is something would definitely come in handy. BUT, using while driving??? Insane.

Monica, I can see where it'd come in handy, too, having been one of those moms.

But having watched a girl in the other lane, obviously studying for a final while she was driving (as we were driving past all the colleges on Hwy 81 to D.C. over one Christmas), I have to wonder if she'd had a steering wheel desk, she'd have been typing a term paper!

Like I said, not while driving. :-) We have no texting law in VA. I've yet to figure out HOW in the world someone can text and drive...no wait, knees. It's all in the knees. *banging head on desk*

Who ever created this, is now gonna lose a lot of money.... Idiotic idea for sure... I do one thing in my car and that is drive and watch the road.. Okay I have a little background music on.

Monica, The girl I saw reading her textbook was driving with her knees.

And yes, Kathleen, I see lawsuits coming, though I suspect the manufacturer has "Do Not Drive while using" instructions, I'll bet they wouldn't always hold up. Or the maker would settle just to keep the bad press down.

It's certainly not the brightest idea around.

With that said, I'm totally with Monica in the fact that I could really envision myself TRYING to use it during my lunch breaks, etc. Let's see...an hour a day, five days a week... Hmm... Where's that link again?

LOL

You know, that's a rather delicate area to shave. I'd think one would want to pay close attention!

Hey, I came out of the library Monday and saw the guy parked next to me with his laptop propped on something on his steering wheel. Must've been something like this. At the time I thought it was a great idea, because he was in the comfort of his car (the library was freezing) taking advantage of the library's wireless signal. Too bad I needed actual books. LOL. Maybe my hubby can make me one for those times when I'm sitting in the parking lot waiting for one of the kids...

JoAnn Ross said...

Keena, agree! Apparently her husband was sort of leaning over from the passenger seat and steering while she was driving and shaving.

Tricia, yeah, I could see it for those days I'd be waiting for kid at various places. Especially if they'd had alpha smarts back in those days.
