Six Sentence Sunday -- #1 from On Lavender Lane

I'm adding something new and fun to the blog: Six Sentence Sunday. It's an idea from a website where authors in several different genres share six sentences they've written. For the next few weeks, my sentences will be from my upcoming novel, On Lavender Lane, the third in my Shelter Bay series which will be in stores January 3rd, 2012,

For those who've read my High Risk books (and you needn't have to enjoy the Shelter Bay books), this is Navy SEAL Lucas Chaffee's story.

So, here goes:

Madeline Durand was braising short ribs in an Omaha department store when her husband's sex video went viral.

The day, which would go down as one of the worst in her life, hadn't exactly begun on a high note. Her early-morning flight from New York was delayed for three hours because of a late spring storm that had barreled into Nebraska, bringing with it tree-bending winds, snow, and ice.

Lots and lots of ice.

On the plus side, when she finally did arrive in Omaha, she was greeted by a sixty-something woman wearing a puffy down coat the same color as her weather-chapped cheeks, and a red knit had pulled down over salt-and-pepper hair. Her down to earth midwestern friendliness gave Madeline hope that her luck may have taken a turn for the better.

I hope you enjoyed this sneak preview of Lucas and Maddy's story! Please check back Friday for a way fun video, and I'll be back with a second Six Sentences next Sunday!

JoAnn! Love the sneak peak into Lucas's story! I've followed all the High Risk guys since you first started writing about them, and I love the Shelter Bay novels as well!

I think the opening line of this Six Sunday post is hysterical... in a sad kind of way. I immediately felt so bad for Maddy, and it definitely made me want to read more to make sure that she gets the life she deserves!

okay - as you well know that's a hell of a first line. You must have done the happy dance when you wrote it - I certainly would have - you got me hooked

Oh, I also loved that first line the best! Hope things get better for her! Great Six!

Angela, Thanks and I'd be delighted if you'd check out my book! Smooches back for commenting!

Amy -- Yes, it is both sad and funny. Of course it gets worse, but Lucas let Maddy get away years ago, and has a lot to atone for, but they're both going to get their Happily Ever After!

Sue --Yes, I'm still dancing over that one, and I tend to find first lines fairly easy, because it's usually how I see my story for the first time. In this one, I'd begun with Lucas, but he kept proving very resistant to heroines I'd tried to fix him up with. (I'd been waiting to write his story from the first of the High Risks, and thought, as I wrote the Shelter Bays, that he'd end up with Sedona, Take the Cake's cupcake baker).

I was getting frustrated when suddenly that line popped into my head and there Maddy was! So, although I usually open with the guys, the first line of the second chapter is now what originally was going to be the first line in the book.

Kallypso -- Yes, it's a romance, so they're definitely going to get better. But not until Maddy's very bad, horrible day gets a LOT worse! And yes, I'm perverse that way, lol.

I don't like this game. I don't like having to wait. I know, I am a brat. Adding to my Goodreads list. :~)

Nubian -- LOL. Sorry! But there will be another six lines next Sunday. If this went on long enough, you'd kind of end up with the Readers Digest edition of On Lavender Lane, LOL.

Thanks for adding me to your Goodreads!

Dee, Yep. Which is how Maddy finds out for certain that everything that happens in Vegas really doesn't stay in Vegas. LOL

Sharon -- You're very welcome! I hope you'll come back next Sunday for more. Thanks for commenting and hugs back. :)

Thanks Carrie Ann! My only problem is with my deadline tomorrow, I'm going to have to read most of the other writers' Six Sunday's on Monday. Or Tuesday, if I'm still alive. :)

I read 5 to 7 books a week and this new "Six Sentence Sunday" has me chomping at the bit for more.

Great idea, even if it is sheer torture for me.
