So, in On Lavender Lane (Jan. 3rd), Maddy and Lucas have come off the beach into the cliff house he built with his father years ago. With them is Scout, the German shepherd Lucas managed to bring home from Afghanistan. A vital part of his SEAL team, when the dog lost a leg to an IED, Lucas, as team medic, performed the amputation. She's sweet and warm-hearted, but unfortunately suffering from PTSD, which is common in dogs returning home from war. Although love and therapy have helped, she still instinctively reacts to loud sounds.
Lucas is explaining to Maddy how he knows about her cooking shows. And told her the reason why he'd broken her heart ten years ago. Which has, unsurprisingly, led to an argument.
One commenter, chosen at random, will receive an On Lavender Lane ARC, with the winner announced here, on twitter, and Facebook on Monday. Enjoy:
"I Googled you. Because," he said, holding up a hand to forestall whatever she'd been about to say, "although I never realized it until I heard you were coming back to town, I guess I'm a glutton for punishment."
"Then you should absolutely love this."
Although Madeline knew it was a cliché, and although she'd never, ever hit anyone in her life before, she slapped him.
The sound, as sharp and loud as a rifle retort, had Scout, who'd been happily curled up on an overstuffed sofa, diving beneath the table.
"Oh hell," Lucas muttered, "could we just take a time-out for a minute?"

Aw, poor Scout! :( Can't wait to find out why Lucas broke Maddy's heart. Great 6, JoAnn. :)
Wonderful snippet! Love your writing style and voice. I think I'll check this out when it becomes available!

Someone needs a time out! LOL! Super six!
Tease, tease, tease can't wait to sit and read the whole thing
Great six! (And I'm feeling bad for Scout too and not the hero! Is that a bad thing? lol)
Love this six! Especially the last line. It definately sounds like someone needs a "Time Out." :)
Each week just means one week closer to release date. Poor Scout.
Ok. The tears are rolling. I never realized until now that the K-9 troops must suffer as well.
So looking forward to this book, and more of Scout's story. A lot has been said recently about military dogs with PTSD, so this promises to be very interesting, especially with the voice you will give it.
Oh Wow a a girl after my own heart... I can't wait until this book is in my hands....
Love it! This is definitely going on my TBR list. Great six (in case you couldn't tell by my enthusiasm LOL!)
I love his concern for both her and the dog. It makes him even more loveable. Great six, JoAnn! :)

Now you add a shell-shocked dog to the story--I can't wait to find out what happens to all 3 characters! :-)
Love the voice here. Love love love it. :-) And yay for her slapping him! Damn google!
Thanks to all for commenting. This week's been crazy, so I'm not going to take time respond to everyone personally, but I do so appreciate the nice words. And yes, I do love Scout. She's one great/sweet dog. (And is anyone surprised I'd have a dog in a book? LOL)
